MDP - Market Access Development Programme



The Market Development Program expands on market access requirements for farmers, giving an introduction of market trends and the role of foodsafety in agricultural products. It introduces certification schemes like Localg.a.p; GlobalG.A.P and HACCP.

The Market Development Programme of Agri Academy divided into three sections to address skills needed for running a successful agricultural business.

MDP1 is accredited under the Agriseta unit standard (US 116278, NQF4, 3 credits) namely “Implement a food safety and quality management system in the agricultural supply chain”. This incorporates the following topics:

  • Consumer trends
  • Market access and Foodsafety
  • Quality problems
  • Localg.a.p
  • Good Agricultural Practices and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Record-keeping

MDP2 is accredited under the Agriseta unit standard (US 116684, NQF4, 3 credits) namely “Participate in the development and management of an agricultural marketing plan”. The following topics are addressed during this course:
What makes a food product successful?

  • Basics of Business and Marketing Plan
  • Value chain
  • Basics of Marketing
  • Risk plan and Monitoring in a Marketing Plan
  • Action Plan and Monitoring

MDP3 is accredited under two Agriseta unit standards namely: “Use communication skills to handle and resolve conflict in the workplace (US 9533, NQF 3, 3 credits) & Illustrate and understand the basic layout of financial statements (US 116083, NQF2, 2 credits)”. The following topics are included:

  • Conflict management
  • Cultural differences
  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Negotiation skills
  • Basics of Finance
  • Financial Plan
  • Cash Flow statements
  • Legal responsibility of Farmer

Included in these courses are e-learning topics from the HP LIFE programme. HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) is a global program ( that trains students, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. Improving IT and business skills to start or grow businesses and create jobs. It consists of face-to-face training, tools and e-learning programs. There are 20 face-to-face training modules and the e-learning programs have grown to 25 modules.
